With Pathfinder, Card has taken a number of the more complex sci-fi elements and used them to create a quality YA fantasy story that is original, easy to understand, and fun to read. Well known in the Sci-fi world for the Ender Saga (notably Ender's Game), and the Homecoming Saga, Card seems to be branching more and more into the fantasy genre with better results each time. Pathfinder is the first book in Orson Scott Cards Serpent World series published by Simon & Schuster in 2010. ![]()

5/31/2023 0 Comments Star wars life debt![]() ![]() " And now to the children you bear within you?" ![]() During the war Chewie extended it to include my brother and me." ![]() The original life debt was to my husband, Han Solo. The story was soon spread to other villages and tribes, thus creating the tradition. After being saved, Urothko pledged his life to Staalpac. In Wookiee culture, this tradition is believed to have started when a young Wookiee named Urothko was nearly killed in the Shadowlands, only to be rescued by an elder called Stalpaac. Some unscrupulous recipients of a life debt would take advantage of their position by enslaving and otherwise mistreating the unfortunate person sworn to their service. Among the Gungans, the bond was fairly loose, while among the Wookiees, the life debt was an extraordinarily solemn matter. The particularities of this bond, and the overall strength of the institution, varied from culture to culture. To summarize, if a person's life was saved by another, the saved person was obligated to pledge their life to protecting and looking after their savior, even to the point of sacrificing their own life, if necessary. The life debt was a social institution found in many honor-bound cultures throughout the galaxy, including the Wookiees, Trandoshans, Gungans, Noghri, Talz, and Srrors'tok. The life debt is greater than any one life." ― Zaalbar, to Mission Vao ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I didn’t want witnesses there to confirm that this had really happened, that this celebration I had looked forward to for the last four years of medical school, and then during the four years of residency, felt more like a funeral. The truth was closer to my not wanting them to see me like this. I assumed that my brother would be preoccupied with his family or with landscaping his new home. I figured my sister would be busy with her obligations as an army lieutenant. I had told my brother and sister not to bother with the trip. I sat near the aisle, next to my mother, who was next to my stepfather. It wasn’t at all how I had pictured graduation from my emergency medicine residency at Mercy Hospital in the South Bronx would be, but it certainly was a blistering end. The following excerpt was taken from the book, The Beauty in Breaking: A Memoir by Michele Harper. ![]() 5/31/2023 0 Comments The dueling neurosurgeons![]() ![]() The unfortunate monarch was examined by Ambroise Paré and Andreas Vesalius, two of the greatest medical minds of the time. The book’s title is drawn from the unhappy story of King Henri II of France who sustained an eventually fatal brain injury due to an errant lance tip at a jousting tournament in 1559. If pondering such neurologic minutiae stimulates your pleasure centers, The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons, the latest by bestselling science writer Sam Kean is sure to be right up your axon. That’s why it’s so hard to fake an honest smile of happiness and so easy to detect a phony one. A genuine smile calls on the coordination of particular brain centers, while smiles that are generated by other emotions don’t use the same neurologic pathways, resulting in subtle differences. But no matter why someone is smiling, people are particularly good at deciphering the truth behind a smile. A smile can reveal so many things: pure joy, utter malevolence or complete indifference. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body : A must-read.
